GENERAL INFORMATION 2018/2019 SEASON

1.    LUCKY DRAW PRIZE

A top of the range Blu Smooth Zero Mk2 swimming wetsuit valued at over R 6,000 will be up for grabs in a lucky draw at the NMBA 10 km Championship Prizegiving ceremony on 26 January 2019.  Each 10 km event completed by a swimmer at the four (4) rounds of the OWS season and at the NMBA 10km Championship will go into the lucky draw as an entry for that swimmer, so the more 10 km events completed, the more lucky draw entries, the better the swimmer’s chances of winning.  Only NMBA registered swimmers are eligible to win the lucky draw prize.  Sincere thanks to Kevin Richards of Blu Smooth wetsuits who kindly donated the wetsuit.  Please show your appreciation and support them at www.blusmooth.com or 152 Main Road, Walmer.

A club relay event (4 x 1.25 km) will be held at the NMBA Championship on Sunday 27 January 2019.  Clubs will be allowed to enter up to four (4) teams a week prior to the Championship, and will be allowed to nominate swimmers up to 30 minutes prior to the start of the relay event.  Each team must comprise two males and two females.  Swimmers may only compete in one (1) team, may swim in any sequence, but may only swim one leg of the event.  Only swimmers that are 14 years or older may be entered in relay teams.  Only swimmers that have completed a 3 km, 5 km or 10 km event at the NMBA Championship and are registered with the club entering the team may be entered into that club’s team(s).  Swimmers shall wear club caps only.  All teams will start together.
Medals will be awarded to the top three teams at the prize giving ceremony immediately after the event.  Points will be awarded to clubs towards the Club Trophy.

4.    OWS CLUB TROPHY

An OWS club trophy will be awarded to the club that scores the most points during the season (at the four (4) OWS rounds and at the NMBA Championship).  Points will be awarded to each swimmer according to the following results and events in each age category.  The trophy will be awarded at the annual NMBA prizegiving ceremony.  The OWS Club Trophy will be awarded only to a club that is affiliated with NMBA.

6.    RACE ENTRIES

Swimmers will enter races online via the www.zsports.co.za/ecswim website as normal.  Swimmers are advised to ensure that their Zsports online profile has the correct SSA number and club details.  If these are incorrect the swimmer’s results will not be uploaded to the SSA database, until such time that they are corrected, which could have an adverse effect on the swimmer’s chances of meeting the NMBA selection criteria.  The Meet Manager Meet Events files have been distributed to clubs and are also available on the Zsports website.

7.    NMBA TEAM CAMP

An Open Water Swimming camp will be held on 23 & 24 February 2019 for swimmers selected to the NMBA team, at a venue to be advised.  The camp will be hosted by a national OWS coach and local experts to prepare the swimmers for SANAT.  The camp will be self-funded (less than R 1,000 per swimmer) and will not be compulsory.

OWS TEAM SELECTION CRITERIA
NMBA Constitution Clause 13.1

Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics (NMBA), in its authority as selector of NMBA swimmers to be recommended for selection to the Eastern Cape Aquatics (ECA) Team, has set selection criteria for recommendation to the ECA Team.  In order to be recommended for selection to the ECA Team, NMBA swimmers need to meet the following requirements:

1.    Be in good standing with their Club, District, ECA and Swimming South Africa (SSA).
2.    Must be capitated with NMBA and SSA.
3.    Achieve the SSA Qualifying Time in the distance in which they wish to compete at SA Open Water Nationals as follows:
3.1.    Competing in one (1) distance:
3.1.1.    Twice at an SSA sanctioned event during the season, and
3.1.2.    Once at the NMBA District Championship event during the season
3.2.    Competing in two (2) distances:
3.2.1.    Once per distance at an SSA sanctioned event during the season, and
3.2.2.    Once per distance at the NMBA District Championship event during the season.
4.    Swimmers may compete outside of the District and/or Province.  Results of non-NMBA events will be considered for NMBA Team selection, provided that:
4.1.    The event is sanctioned by SSA;
4.2.    The swimmer has obtained the necessary clearances to compete in a non-NMBA District event and/or Championship;
4.3.    It is the Swimmer’s responsibility to supply the NMBA OWS Selection Committee Convenor with the necessary proof of participation, SSA sanction, clearance and result from an event outside of the NMBA District.
5.    For the purposes of these criteria, a swimmer’s age will be considered as at the 31st December of the year of the SSA OWS National Championships.
6.    No swimmer under the age of 13 years will be eligible for selection to the NMBA Team.
7.    Only swimmers 14 years of age or older, may qualify and compete in the 5km and/or 10km.
8.    Only Masters and swimmers 13 years of age may qualify and compete in the 3km event under the one (1) distance category in 3.1 above.  All other swimmers opting for this category will have to elect either the 5 km or the 10 km distance.
9.    Only swimmers that provide an official for no less than three events during the season will be eligible for selection to the NMBA Team.  This does not apply to swimmers that are 19 years or older.  Swimmers that are unable to meet this requirement may submit a written application with valid reasons for exemption to the OWS Committee Convener by 30 November 2018.  Late applications will not be considered.
10.    Swimmers must participate in a minimum of two (2) of the four (4) scheduled NMBA District     events during the season, and they must compete in their chosen distance(s) at the NMBA District Championship.
11.    The 1.25 km scheduled events are for growth and development only.  Results and participation in     these events will not be considered for NMBA Team selection.
12.    The 7.5 km scheduled events are included to give Under 18 swimmers an opportunity to record an official 7.5 km time, and to provide an opportunity for swimmers to progress to the 10km event. Only swimmers who have touched for an official 5 km time and completed the 7.5 km event will be considered for selection for the 5 km event.
13.    The disciplinary record of a swimmer will be taken into consideration when selecting team members.
14.    Should a swimmer not meet the NMBA team selection criteria due to reasons beyond his or her control, then supporting documents must be provided to the NMBA OWS Selection Committee Convenor. (e.g. Sick Certificate in the event of illness).
15.    Compliance with the NMBA Team selection criteria will NOT guarantee selection. The final recommendation will be taken by the OWS Selection Committee and must be ratified by the NMBA Executive before a recommendation will be submitted to ECA.
16.    All NMBA swimmers selected to the ECA team will be expected to abide by NMBA team management rules and NMBA Code of Conduct.
