Formerly operating as Eastern Province Aquatics or EP Aquatics, the Federation was established in the early 1900's to govern and promote aquatic sports in the western half of the Eastern Cape. Early 2014 saw the Federation falling in line with government's regional demarcations and the Federation now continues its work as one of nine Federations in the Eastern Cape, operating under the new name of Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics (NMBA).
